A drive-thru worker in Minneapolis told police he was shot at and begged for his life after a customer grabbed a gun and fired a “warning” shot during an argument over moving forward in line.

Ahmed Maulid Hashi, 22, of Minneapolis, faces charges of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, possessing a firearm or ammunition after a conviction for a crime of violence and fleeing police in a motor vehicle.

According to the complaint, officers responded to a shots fired call outside a business on Lake Street East on Wednesday, June 3. The victim reported he was working at the drive-thru window when a blue Tesla pulled up and refused to move forward after being asked, leading to an argument with the driver, later identified as Hashi and his passenger.

The victim said the passenger pulled out a gun and pointed it at him. The victim jumped out of the window to serve the next customer, but as he tried to return inside, both Hashi and the passenger got out of the car and tried to hit him. During the struggle, the victim said Hashi grabbed the gun from the passenger, tried to fire it once or twice without success, then racked the slide, pointed the gun at the victim’s head and fired a shot.

The victim told officers his ears were ringing and he screamed “please don’t kill me.”

Hashi and the passenger fled in the Tesla. Officers soon found the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop, but Hashi did not pull over and instead accelerated and weaved through traffic. Police performed a the victim maneuver to end the pursuit and took both men into custody at the Hennepin County Jail.

Officers recovered a firearm from the passenger. The store manager provided the victim footage that corroborated the victim’s account, and officers also reviewed cell phone videos from witnesses, which captured the sound of a gunshot during the altercation.

In a post-Miranda interview, the passenger admitted to striking the victim and wrestling with him, stating that Hashi took his handgun during the fight. The passenger described seeing Hashi remove the firearm from his waistband and struggle with the victim over it.

The complaint notes Hashi’s prior convictions in 2022 for 1st-degree aggravated robbery and 1st-degree burglary with a dangerous weapon, as well as a juvenile conviction for similar offenses earlier that year.

Hashi is in custody at the Hennepin County Jail. The charges were filed Monday, June 15 in Hennepin County District Court.
