A Minneapolis man is facing charges after a shooting incident that left one man dead near the intersection of Penn Avenue North and Olson Memorial Highway.
The incident occurred on May 11, 2016, when police received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots and a person lying in the street.
Stevevontae Dellshawn Champion, 30, of Minneapolis, faces two counts of 2nd-degree murder with intent but not premeditated. According to the complaint, officers found a deceased adult male near Oliver Avenue North, with multiple gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported seeing the victim fleeing from a red Dodge Stratus, which had been shot at, before being chased down by Champion, who then shot him.

The witness accounts detail a chaotic scene, with one witness observing Champion chasing the victim and firing multiple shots. Another witness described hearing several volleys of gunfire and seeing the victim fall to the ground after being shot in the leg. Champion allegedly stood over the victim and fired additional shots before fleeing the scene. Officers recovered a .45 caliber firearm from the front passenger seat of the red car, which was found with bullet holes and front-end damage.
The complaint notes that Champion admitted to chasing the victim and shooting him after the incident. Witnesses corroborated this account, stating that Champion was armed with a Ruger 9mm handgun during the chase. The investigation revealed that the victim and another individual had been involved in a shooting incident prior to the chase, which may have contributed to the confrontation.
Champion is currently in custody. A court date has not yet been set.
