A 26-year-old man is charged with attempted second-degree murder after he shot his father in the head during an argument at an Edina residence, according to investigators.

The shooting happened around 10:40 a.m. on Friday, May 1, at a residence on the 6300 block of York Avenue South in Edina.

Mahamoud Hachi Farah, of Brooklyn Park, faces one count of attempted second-degree murder and one count of felon in possession of a firearm in Hennepin County District Court. He’s currently being held on $1 million bail.

According to the complaint, Edina police officers responded to the residence after a caller reported their father had been shot in the head. Officers arrived and found the victim, an adult male, lying on the floor with blood around him. He was unable to respond to officers, the documents say.

Officers saw the victim had what appeared to be a gunshot entry wound near the left side of his neck below his ear and behind the jaw, with an exit wound in his cheek. He was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center and a medical update later revealed the bullet hit and broke the victim’s C2 vertebrae. He also suffered a fractured jaw and an internal dissection of his carotid artery.

A witness told investigators Farah does “hard core” drugs and has a gun and has threatened to kill the victim and the family in the past. A second witness told investigators they observed an argument between the victim and Farah and saw Farah shoot the victim in the head, the complaint states.

About 30 minutes before the shooting, Farah allegedly stole 9mm hollow point ammunition from a business called Frontiersman Sports in St. Louis Park, according to investigators who learned of the theft from St. Louis Park police. The brand of stolen ammunition was Sellier & Bellot, the same brand of casing found at the scene.

Farah fled in a white Chevrolet Impala. The vehicle was tracked to a Cub Foods in Brooklyn Park where a pursuit was initiated. Officers blocked the vehicle in and arrested Farah shortly after noon, court documents and booking records show.

Inside the vehicle, officers found a Taurus 9mm handgun with an extended magazine, 9mm Sellier and Bellot ammunition with a Frontiersman price label, loose cartridges still in the ammo box and drug residue. Farah was still wearing clothing that matched his appearance in the Frontiersman store hours before.

Investigators also found that Farah’s phone had connected to the wireless internet of a residence directly below the shooting apartment, placing his phone within range of the location at the time of the incident.

Court records show Farah has two prior felony convictions. He was convicted of felony threats of violence in Rice County in 2024 and second-degree drug possession in Anoka County in January 2025.

Farah was set to make his first court appearance on the charges Tuesday. If convicted of attempted second-degree murder, he faces up to 20 years in prison. The charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of three years.
