A 41-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday night at an apartment complex in Maplewood and a suspect was arrested the next morning in Illinois, officials say.

Maplewood police responded to the Sherwood Glen apartments near County Road B E and Hazelwood Street around 8:20 p.m. after a report of gunshots, according to a city spokesperson. Officers found bullet holes in two apartment units and a man with a gunshot wound inside one of them.

Officers provided aid, but the man died at the scene. Police are investigating the death as a homicide.

Officers who arrived first on scene reported bullet holes that came through the door of one of the units and forced entry inside, according to initial radio dispatches. The victim was found unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, with CPR underway shortly after.

An additional round went into a neighboring unit, but it was vacant and no other injuries were reported. A possible suspect was seen running from the area, described as a man in his 30s wearing a black hoodie.

The Maplewood Police Department worked with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension to investigate. A man was arrested in Rock Island, Ill., on Friday morning in connection with the shooting.

The names of the victim and the suspect have not been released, with investigation ongoing.
