Responders arrived to find two people--a 48-year-old woman from Cloquet and a 59-year-old man from out-of-state--both unresponsive. They were pronounced dead at the scene a short time later.

Authorities said the pair had been riding together in a side-by-side ATV as part of a larger group, but at some point became separated. Another rider came across the overturned ATV in the water and found the two inside. Members of the group attempted CPR before emergency crews arrived, but were not able to revive them.

The Carlton County Sheriff’s Office said the crash remains under investigation and no further details have been released.
