Investigators said the driver of a 2016 Dodge Journey was traveling southbound on County Road 101 and stopped at the stop sign for the railroad crossing. As the driver proceeded across the tracks, they were struck by the westbound Burlington Northern Santa Fe train.

The driver was identified as Douglas Stewart, 61, of Cass Lake. His passenger was his wife, Tiffany Stewart, 42, also of Cass Lake. The train was being operated by a 36-year-old man from Kempton, N.D. No injuries involving the train crew were reported.

The Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances leading up to the crash.
