Police were called to the intersection of 3rd Street South and 2nd Avenue South around 3:34 a.m. on Oct. 5 after reports of a shooting. Officers found a man suffering from life-threatening gunshot wounds and transported him to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
A woman who was with the victim told police the two had been at Rick’s Cabaret when the victim got into a verbal dispute with the bouncer as they were leaving. She said the victim went back across the street toward the bouncer and the two began fighting, throwing punches at each other. According to her statement, the victim knocked the bouncer to the ground before the pair started walking away.
The woman said the bouncer then approached while clutching his waistband as if holding a gun. She began running and heard one gunshot, followed by three more. When she turned around, she saw the victim lying on the ground. She also provided police with cellphone video of the fight showing the exchange of punches before the recording ended.

Investigators found several spent shell casings and one live round at the scene. Management at Rick’s Cabaret identified the bouncer as Thompson and confirmed they saw him and the victim fighting before gunfire erupted.
Officers later executed a search warrant at Thompson’s apartment, where they found a bag of handgun ammunition next to his Social Security card and mail bearing his name. Forensic testing of the ammunition and recovered casings remains pending.
Thompson was booked into custody and made an initial court appearance on Monday where bail was set at $50,000. The court also imposed a no-contact order with the victim.
If convicted, Thompson faces up to 10 years in prison.
Court records show Thompson was charged and convicted of possessing a firearm without a permit in 2023 and was on probation at the time of the shooting.
