Investigators say the crash happened around 6 p.m. on July 2, 2025, at the intersection of Highway 48 and Wildlife Road. A 63-year-old man, Kameron Lee Ellis, was driving a red 2021 Ford F-150 east on Highway 48 when Olson, driving a white 1999 Ford F-150, approached from Wildlife Road traveling well over the speed limit and failed to stop at a clearly marked stop sign. Olson’s truck struck Ellis’ vehicle, sending both into the ditch.
First responders from multiple agencies, including Mille Lacs Tribal Police and Hinckley Fire, arrived to find both vehicles severely damaged. Ellis was found inside his truck and despite lifesaving efforts at the scene, he was pronounced dead. Two juveniles and Olson were trapped inside the overturned pickup and a third juvenile was found in the grass with serious injuries. All four were airlifted to area hospitals with critical injuries. Authorities said no one in Olson’s truck was wearing a seat belt.
Court documents say one of the children suffered severe brain trauma and internal injuries requiring sedation and paralysis, while another had multiple spinal and organ injuries. A third child sustained fractures to the face, ribs and legs.

A search warrant later obtained for Olson’s blood revealed methamphetamine and amphetamine, along with THC compounds. No alcohol was detected. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension confirmed those test results.
Crash reconstruction by the State Patrol determined Olson was traveling 64–68 mph in a 55-mph zone when he entered the intersection without stopping. Data from his court-ordered ignition interlock device showed a photo of him driving the truck just 20 minutes before the crash.
Records show Olson has prior DWI convictions from 2020 and 2021, with multiple speeding and seatbelt violations in recent years.
If convicted, Olson faces up to 15 years in prison for the homicide charge and additional prison time for each count of criminal vehicular operation.
He has been summoned to appear in Pine County District Court on the charges. However, Olson also has an active warrant in Isanti County from Dec. 2024, where he was charged with operating a vehicle without a required ignition interlock device. The warrant was issued after he failed to appear in court in July 2025.
