Level 3 Sex Offender Accused of Brutal Assault in Saint Paul Apartment

A Saint Paul man is facing serious felony charges after authorities say he sexually assaulted a woman and left her with critical injuries during an incident earlier this month.

According to a criminal complaint, 60-year-old Anthony Dewalt is been charged with second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving force and first-degree assault causing great bodily harm in connection with the Aug. 5 incident.

Investigators say Dewalt, a level 3 sex offender on intensive supervised release for a prior conviction, was visited by his probation officer during an unannounced check at his apartment on the 500 block of Stryker Avenue. As part of his release, Dewalt was prohibited from having visitors without pre-approval, but when the officer arrived, he reportedly answered the door naked before briefly closing it and returning in boxer briefs. The officer noticed blood on Dewalt’s chest and stepped inside the apartment, where it appeared someone else was present.

Dewalt told the officer that his friend was in the bathtub and unable to come out. A knife with what appeared to be blood on it was located in the bedroom, and a meth pipe was seen on the couch. When the bathroom door was opened, the probation officer found an unresponsive naked woman in the bathtub with cold water running.

Police were called to the scene, and when they arrived, Dewalt briefly opened the door before deadbolting it and yelling, “I’m ready for you.” He refused repeated orders to come out until officers forced entry and took him into custody.

The woman had a very weak pulse and required CPR and Narcan before being rushed to a hospital. Doctors intubated her and conducted a sexual assault examination, documenting extensive injuries. The complaint states she suffered severe bruising throughout her body, bite marks on her chest and neck and lacerations to both nipples. One nipple appeared to have been bitten off, an injury inconsistent with use of a knife. Police later found a severed nipple in a bucket with a mop in Dewalt’s kitchen, along with blood on a mattress and a knife. Investigators also recovered fentanyl and cocaine in his bedroom.

The victim later regained consciousness but told police she had no memory of the assault.

When interviewed, Dewalt denied any sexual encounter occurred and said the woman was just a friend who visited to help clean and cook. He claimed she was having an asthma attack and became unresponsive in the tub, and that the blood and scratches on his chest were from when he was lying with her and trying to revive her. He admitted pouring water on her but said he never called 911.

Court records show Dewalt has a lengthy violent history. In 2005, he was convicted of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Wright County after dragging her outside during a late-night gathering and violently attacking her. He was originally sentenced to life in prison because of multiple aggravating factors, but the Minnesota Supreme Court later reversed the life term because the charges were not brought by grand jury indictment. His convictions were upheld and he was re-sentenced to 12 years in prison. Dewalt also has a 1987 murder conviction and two prior felony assault convictions. Authorities describe him as highly dangerous.

If convicted of the new charges, Dewalt faces up to 25 years for the sexual conduct charge and 20 years for the assault. A judge ordered him held in custody on $200,000 bail.
