The charges stemmed from a May 2023 incident in Lake Elmo, where Powers held his then-girlfriend captive for over a day. According to court documents, he assaulted, raped, and threatened to kill her. The victim was rescued after her employer requested a welfare check when she failed to show up for work. Deputies arrived to find her screaming for help from a window before being pulled out of view. They forced entry into the apartment and arrested Powers.
