Charges Filed in Armed Standoff at Minneapolis Group Home

A Minneapolis man is charged after authorities say he pointed a shotgun at roommates inside a group home, fired at least one round and threatened officers during an ensuing standoff.

It happened Tuesday, Jan. 27 near the 900 block of Penn Avenue North in Minneapolis.

Noah Stephen Pastick, 45, is charged with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and threats of violence, according to the criminal complaint.

Police were called to the residence after reports that a male occupant was threatening roommates with a shotgun and that a round may have been fired inside the home. Officers staged outside and initiated a SWAT response to ensure scene safety. Investigators say Pastick was seen inside the home and appeared highly agitated. While officers were outside, they heard one round of fire from inside the residence, the documents say.

Pastick allegedly later broke a window on the upper level of the home and was seen holding what officers believed was a sword. During the standoff, investigators say Pastick made statements related to suicide by law enforcement. Several hours later, he exited the residence and was taken into custody without injury.

A search warrant was obtained and executed at the home, with investigators finding multiple shotgun holes in the ceiling, floor and walls along with spent shell casings. A black long-barreled shotgun was recovered from the second floor. A katana-style sword and scabbard were also located inside the residence.

Roommates were interviewed after leaving the home. An adult male identified in court records as Victim 1 told officers he had been in his room when he heard Pastick yelling and playing video games and believed Pastick had been drinking. After Victim 1 asked him to be quiet, Pastick came to the doorway holding a shotgun, pointed it at him and asked if he wanted to “escalate things” before pointing the weapon away. Victim 1 told officers he was extremely afraid. He later heard a gunshot, gathered the other residents and left the home before calling 911.

A woman identified as Victim 2 told officers Pastick walked through the house with a gun, pointed it at her and threatened to kill the officers outside.

Court records show the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office filed a petition on Jan. 30 seeking an Extreme Risk Protection Order against Pastick. Prosecutors requested a temporary emergency order and a longer-term order that could last up to one year, arguing he poses a significant danger to others or himself if allowed to possess firearms.

In the petition, prosecutors cited the Jan. 27 incident, including allegations that Pastick pointed a shotgun at multiple roommates, fired at least one round inside the home and shouted for officers to kill him when he exited the residence. The filing also says one roommate obtained an order for protection after the incident and two other orders for protection had been filed against Pastick in previous years.

While Pastick remains in custody as of publication, prosecutors wrote that his anticipated release prompted the request for the order, citing concerns that his recent behavior presents an immediate and present danger if he were to regain access to a firearm. The petition says he is believed to possess one firearm.

The second-degree assault charge carries a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison and a fine. The threats of violence charge carries a maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a fine.
