The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the call came in just after 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday with a caller reporting an overturned canoe with a body floating nearby. Deputies responded along with the Chisholm ambulance, French Township First Responders, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office. Family members of the man were also at the lake.
Authorities identified the victim as Louis Vajdl, a longtime Chisholm resident. Deputies said he was not wearing a life jacket and was found floating near the canoe. Family told investigators he had gone out that morning to check the wild rice, something he had done for many years.
The sheriff’s office said criminal activity is not suspected, and the case remains under investigation. The Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death at a later time.
