When officers arrived, they found a 15-year-old male victim suffering from a life-threatening gunshot wound. He was taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
According to authorities, three males were seen fleeing the area following the shooting. Investigators say one of the suspects has since been detained. The remaining two had not been located as of Saturday night.
The mall was briefly placed on lockdown as a precaution while officers cleared the area. Authorities say there is no known ongoing threat to the public.
Friday’s homicide is at least the second gunfire-related incident at Northtown Mall in the past year. Last fall, officers responded to a report of shots fired outside the building, though no one was struck.
The Anoka County Sheriff’s Office on Saturday night identified the victim as Sudais Abdi Omar, 15, of Brooklyn Park.
ACSO says that 20-year-old Ayub Abdullahi Mohamed taken into custody related to the investigation, for aiding an offender, though he has not yet been formally charged.
Officials say the investigation remains active and additional details may be released soon.
