Authorities ID Men Killed in SWAT Standoff at Moorhead Apartment

The Ramsey County Medical Examiner has identified the two men fatally shot by police during a domestic incident at a Moorhead apartment on August 11.

Authorities on Friday identified the men as Nathan Heiberg, 42, of Moorhead, and Lucas Heiberg, 41, of Grand Forks, N.D.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension also released the names of three Fargo police officers who discharged their firearms during the encounter. The officers, members of the Red River Valley SWAT Team, were placed on critical incident leave by the Fargo Police Department.

The officers were identified as Sgt. Michael Anderson, who has 10 years of law enforcement experience, Sgt. Kyle Seehusen, with 12 years of service, and Officer Tyler Seehusen, with eight years of experience.

According to the BCA’s initial findings, Moorhead police were called to an apartment building in the 2400 block of Third Avenue North just after 8:45 p.m. on a report of a domestic assault and protection order violation. A woman told officers she had been assaulted by Nathan and Lucas. Two children, ages 5 and 6, were also inside the apartment at the time.

When officers went to speak with the two men, they did not respond. Police began to force the apartment door open when a firearm was discharged from inside. Officers retreated, called for backup, and evacuated nearby units. The Red River Valley SWAT Team arrived to assist, and at some point entered the apartment, where shots were fired and both Nathan and Lucas were struck.

Medical aid was provided at the scene. Lucas was pronounced dead in the apartment, while Nathan was transported by ambulance and died at the hospital shortly after arriving. The children inside were found unharmed.

BCA investigators recovered two firearms from the apartment, and portions of the incident were captured on body-worn cameras. The Moorhead Police Department requested the BCA lead the investigation. When complete, the findings will be turned over to the Clay County Attorney’s Office for review.
