A 20-year-old Minneapolis man is charged with attempted murder and first-degree assault after police say he shot another man in the face during a dispute at a park in Apple Valley in May.

He allegedly used a “peanut butter-colored” P80 9mm handgun, a firearm that police later connected to social media videos showing Mohamed and his friends displaying weapons in the days leading up to the shooting.
Officers responded to the park just after 9 p.m. following multiple 911 calls reporting a man chasing people with a gun. Callers described a male in a white hoodie and ski mask who was armed and later began shooting. Two vehicles were also reported fleeing the area.
A female caller told dispatch that her friend had been shot. Officers later identified the shooter as Mohamed, who admitted he had gone to the park with two friends in a white Nissan Altima to find his sister, who wasn’t answering calls from their mother. He confirmed he was wearing a white hoodie and ski mask when he arrived.

At the park, Mohamed’s sister was with friends, including a girl who identified Mohamed by name and saw him approaching in a mask. That witness told police Mohamed’s sister shouted his name repeatedly and tried to stop him as he got into an argument with another person. The witness tried to stop Mohamed from pulling a gun from under his hoodie but said he managed to draw it, tried hitting people with it and pointed it at the person he had been arguing with.
Moments later, the victim arrived after reportedly receiving a phone call where he heard someone say, “If you don’t come back, I’m going to kill your friend.” As the victim pulled up, a female yelled “he’s gonna shoot you.” The victim was then shot in the face.

Mohamed later told investigators that two cars had sped into the park and he fired at one of them. He claimed the occupants were also shooting at him. However, police found no evidence of gunfire from inside the victim’s vehicle.
During a forensic review of Mohamed’s phone and his friends’ social media accounts, officers found videos of them handling guns, including the same P80 handgun, in the days and hours before the shooting. Afterward, Mohamed messaged a friend saying, “I’m almost about to [be] locked up. The girls are snitching.”
Mohamed is charged with attempted second-degree murder and first-degree assault, both felonies. He is expected to make an initial court appearance Tuesday afternoon.
