A Bagley man swung a metal pole at another man during an argument over missing belongings and hit a car instead, leaving a large dent, according to a criminal complaint.

Wendell Roy Cloud, 23, is charged in Clearwater County District Court with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and first-degree damage to property. The charges were filed November 2.

According to the complaint, a Clearwater County deputy responded at about 3:31 p.m. on October 31 to a report of two people fighting with metal poles at a home in the county. The deputy found Cloud in the yard and handcuffed him because weapons had been reported. The deputy noted that Cloud appeared to be under the influence of controlled substances.

Cloud told the deputy he had bought items from the other man a while ago and they had gone missing, the complaint says. He said the two argued inside the house and then outside, where he got “really mad,” picked up a metal pole and swung it at the man. He said he missed and hit a vehicle, then put the pole down. He said he did it because he wanted his things back. The deputy found the items Cloud described in his backpack.

The other man first said Cloud was swinging the pole at the vehicle, then said Cloud may have tried to hit him but missed, according to the complaint. A woman at the home said Cloud struck the vehicle with the pole.

The deputy found a large dent in the vehicle’s driver’s side quarter panel with the paint cracked down to bare metal, the complaint says. A dent repair specialist told the deputy a proper repair could cost thousands of dollars. Several knives and a syringe were found on Cloud when he was searched.
