Police say a man stopped by a task force at Hiawatha and Cedar avenues in Minneapolis had nearly 55 grams of methamphetamine in a bag at his feet and about 390 more grams were found in his apartment.
Kenneth Allen Thompson Jr., 47, of Saint Louis Park, is charged in Hennepin County District Court with first-degree drug sale, first-degree drug possession and two counts of fifth-degree drug possession, according to a complaint filed October 30.
The complaint says officers with the Violent Offender Task Force got a tip in September and October from a confidential informant about a man selling methamphetamine and other drugs. Officers identified Thompson and in October the informant bought a first-degree amount of methamphetamine from him in a controlled purchase.

On October 28, officers followed Thompson as he left his apartment with a black backpack and drove away. They stopped his car at Hiawatha and Cedar, where he was slow to pull over, jerked the car to the right as if to flee and then put it in reverse before officers blocked him in. A white bag fell from his person as he was handcuffed. The complaint says it held about 54.93 grams of methamphetamine. Officers also found two cell phones and $1,400 in his car.
A search of his apartment found a Hi-Point handgun in a bedroom hamper and several baggies. One shoebox held about 4.7 grams of suspected cocaine. Another held seven baggies of suspected methamphetamine of about 55 to 57 grams each, according to the complaint.
After being read his rights, Thompson told police the car was his and no one else drove it. When asked about the drugs, he said, “so basically the person I was going to see set me up.” He denied knowing he had drugs on him, the complaint says. The complaint says he has a prior felony conviction.
