A Saint Paul woman went into another resident’s room at a shelter and punched the sleeping woman until she lost consciousness, according to a criminal complaint.

Harmony Joella Montgomery, 20, is charged in Ramsey County District Court with first-degree burglary and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm. The charges were filed November 2.

According to the complaint, officers were called to the shelter at about 11:15 p.m. on October 31. Montgomery met them at the door and said she had just beaten up a woman who she said had stolen $36 from her. Officers noted a strong odor of alcohol on her breath.

A shift lead told officers Montgomery had returned after curfew and was reprimanded, the complaint says. She became irate, jumped over the employee counter and went up the staff-only stairs to the second floor, where she went into another resident’s room.

The woman told officers she had briefly roomed with Montgomery before staff separated them. She said she woke up to Montgomery standing next to her bed and hitting her with her fists and a cell phone. She said her vision blurred and she lost consciousness after several blows to the head.

Another resident pulled Montgomery off her, according to the complaint. When the woman went down the stairs for help, Montgomery followed her into the stairwell and punched her in the face several more times. Officers saw blood on her bed and injuries to her head and face.
