A Minneapolis man is accused of attacking his father with a butter knife inside the family’s northeast Minneapolis home, leaving him with cuts on his arms and face, according to a criminal complaint.

Adam Christopher Ramirez, 38, faces felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm. The complaint was filed Oct. 16 in Hennepin County District Court, and bail was set at $50,000.

According to the complaint, officers were called on Oct. 14 to a report that a son had stabbed his father in the arm. They detained Ramirez, who matched the description of the suspect, and found a butter knife in the backyard.

Officers found his father on the living room couch, bleeding from a cut on his left arm, with a small cut below his left eye, cuts on his right forearm and right hand and bruises on both arms. He told police Ramirez had been swearing and yelling at him throughout the day, then grabbed a butter knife off the counter and tried to stab him repeatedly as he covered his face with his arms.

Ramirez then punched his father, knocking him to the ground, and ran outside with the knife, the complaint says. A family member told police she saw the punch and called 911. The father was taken to a hospital by ambulance.

Ramirez declined to speak with an investigator, according to the complaint.

The second-degree assault count carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison, a fine of up to $14,000 or both, according to the complaint.
