A Saint Paul man who lay on the hood of a police squad car in Minneapolis on October 2, 2026, had a handgun in his waistband that he is barred from possessing, according to charges.

Antoine Lamont McDaniel, 44, of Saint Paul, faces a felony charge of possessing a firearm or ammunition after a conviction for a crime of violence.

According to the complaint, at about 6:37 p.m., Metro Transit police officers on routine patrol near Hennepin Avenue and 7th Street South saw a man who appeared to be under the influence of a controlled substance pacing in front of traffic. He was sweating profusely despite the mild temperature and was seen placing himself in front of passing cars. When officers activated their lights and sirens, McDaniel approached the squad car and lay on the hood on his back. He did not respond when asked if he needed medical attention.

Officers noticed an “L” shaped object in his waistband that appeared to be a handgun. Upon detaining him, they found a Glock 43 handgun with six rounds in the magazine and a box of 9mm hollow point ammunition. The complaint says McDaniel is prohibited from possessing a firearm or ammunition because of a prior conviction for a crime of violence.

During a search incident to his arrest, officers found a vial of suspected phencyclidine (PCP). The complaint says the liquid smelled of acetone but could not be tested because it destroyed the evidence packaging. McDaniel told medical staff that he had used PCP and that PCP was in the vial.

The complaint states that McDaniel was the subject of a KOPS alert hold for a domestic case at the time of his arrest.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison, according to the complaint.
