A man who fired at an armored SWAT vehicle during a standoff at a rural Battle Lake home was shot and killed by law enforcement, the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office says.
Deputies were called around 5:47 p.m. on September 25 to a disturbance at a home in the 30000 block of Twin Lakes Road, according to the sheriff’s office.
The caller said they had stopped at the home to check on a relative and found the door barricaded. A man eventually came to the door with a shotgun, pointed it at the caller and said they were trespassing, according to the caller’s account. The man then struck the caller with the butt of the shotgun and forced them into their vehicle before going back inside and barricading the doors.

The Otter Tail County SWAT team responded and tried to communicate and negotiate with the man, the sheriff’s office said. During the standoff, he fired at an armored SWAT vehicle. SWAT teams from Douglas County and the Red River Valley were called in to help.
According to preliminary information, the man later came out of the home and pointed a firearm at law enforcement. An officer fired, striking him. Officers and medical crews gave him aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
No officers were hurt.
The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is investigating the shooting. The man’s name will be released after notifications.
