A woman was found dead inside a south Minneapolis apartment early Friday after firefighters responded to a blaze at the building.

Minneapolis Fire Department crews arrived at an apartment building on the 2100 block of Harriet Avenue around 12:45 a.m. on Friday, May 1, and found thick smoke in the hallways.

Firefighters determined the smoke was coming from a second-floor apartment.

Crews entered the unit and extinguished the flames before the fire spread to other parts of the building.

While searching the building, firefighters discovered a deceased adult woman inside the apartment where the fire apparently started. The Minneapolis Police Department and the Hennepin County Medical Examiner were notified. The medical examiner will determine the cause of death.

“Any loss of life is always difficult,” said Minneapolis Fire Department Interim Chief Melanie Rucker. “Our thoughts are with the family.”

The Red Cross was called to provide support to two residents displaced by the smoke and fire. No other injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
