A man stabbed a staff member in the stomach with a steak knife after luring him into a hallway at a residential group home in Austin last week, according to a criminal complaint filed in Mower County.

Ethan Daniel Gregg, 26, of Austin, faces a charge of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He was arrested after fleeing the residence and located during a traffic stop.

Austin police were dispatched to the residence on the 1800 block of Oakland Avenue West around 6:55 p.m. on March 26 after a report of a stabbing. Officers were told that the person who had been stabbed was a staff member, that the victim was outside and that the person who did the stabbing was still inside.

Officers found the victim, an adult male staff member, outside holding the front of his stomach. They observed a wound on the lower left portion of his abdomen and provided medical assistance until paramedics arrived.

The victim told officers that Gregg called him over to his bedroom. When the victim walked into the hallway, Gregg came out of his room and stabbed him in the stomach with a steak knife. Everyone other than Gregg then left the residence. The victim was taken to the hospital by paramedics.

Another staff member at the residence told officers Gregg had been acting strangely before the attack. The witness confirmed that Gregg called for the victim and stabbed him when he walked over.

Officers found the steak knife in the kitchen area. Gregg had fled the residence before police arrived. Officers later found his vehicle and conducted a traffic stop. He was taken into custody.

Second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.
