The shooting happened just before 2 p.m., inside Loring Towers at 15 East Grant Street, in the Loring Park neighborhood.

Officers were dispatched at 1:51 p.m. after receiving a report of a fight in the first floor lobby. While en route, the call was updated to a shooting and included a description of a possible suspect. The first officer on scene arrested the suspect without incident and recovered a shotgun and several shells, MPD said.

One man was found deceased inside the first floor lobby and another was found dead in a second floor hallway. Both died from shotgun wounds, the department said, and all three are adults who lived in the building.

Investigators believe an argument between the men escalated into gunfire. While officials stressed that the shooting was not random, they acknowledged the fear it caused for the dozens of residents inside who heard the fight and the gunshots. Minneapolis police said homicide investigators are working to determine the exact sequence of events.

In a media conference Saturday afternoon, MPD Chief Brian O’Hara thanked officers and first responders for their quick actions in arresting the suspect before more people were hurt:

“While today's event is not random, it is still yet another painful reminder of how quickly arguments can turn deadly when guns are involved,” O’Hara said, noting that the case will be carefully prepared for charging.

The apartment building remains an active crime scene as of publication. Residents cannot access the front lobby where one of the victims was killed and are temporarily unable to use a rear door while the investigation continues. The medical examiner is expected to release the identities of the two victims in the coming days.

Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
