Saint Paul police are investigating the city’s 16th homicide of 2021 after a gunfight outside an east side apartment complex left a man dead late Monday afternoon.

Multiple callers reported two males shooting at each other in the parking lot of the apartment complex on the 800 block of Hazel St. N. and officers on scene shortly after the report found the victim down on the ground around 5:35 p.m.

A possible suspect was described as a younger black male, thin, about 20 and wearing a black hoodie with white lettering, dark blue skinny jeans. That person was reported to have fled east between the apartments, then south.

Officers found multiple casings at the scene and gunfire damage to one vehicle nearby. They requested K9 and State Patrol helicopter assistance for the suspect search, which was unsuccessful.

Medics reported the man suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced deceased on scene.

SPPD said in a media release that the victim is a male and it is not believed to have been random incident. Anyone with info is asked to call 651-266-5650.

Police on Tuesday identified the victim of this shooting as Michael Dashawn Redding, 21, of South St. Paul. No arrests have been announced.
