According to the criminal complaint, Wade Edward Kelvie, 60, is accused of assaulting the woman on Jan. 3, 2026. Police were dispatched around 2:42 p.m. that day to the area of Concord Street and Annapolis Street for a welfare check after reports of a woman walking in the middle of the road wearing only underwear and covered in blood.

Officers found the woman sitting on a sidewalk in snow and slush with significant facial injuries, including a deep laceration above her left eye and swelling around both eyes. Police described her as being covered in blood from head to toe and appearing disoriented and fearful. She was transported to Regions Hospital for treatment.

Investigators followed a trail of bloody footprints and blood in the snow that led from the street to a driveway and detached garage of a home on Concord Street. Officers found a large pool of blood near the garage entrance, blood splattered on the exterior of the house and evidence of a struggle inside the garage. Inside, police reported extensive blood spatter on walls, a door frame, a deep freezer and a fire extinguisher, along with hair stuck to the extinguisher. A knife with blood and hair on it was recovered from a bin near the garage entrance, along with blood-soaked clothing and rags.

Kelvie exited the residence while officers were on scene and was taken into custody. Police noted blood on his ankle, face and nose. After being advised of his rights, Kelvie told officers he had been staying in the garage and claimed he was waiting for people he believed had been breaking into the property. He admitted throwing the woman to the ground, punching her multiple times in the head in an attempt to knock her out and continuing to strike her when she tried to stand or leave. Kelvie told investigators he ordered the woman to remove her clothes so she could not escape and said he held her in the garage for approximately 30 minutes.

The complaint states that a property owner later arrived and told Kelvie to let the woman go, after which she left the garage partially clothed and bleeding. During transport to jail, Kelvie reportedly expressed anger over being arrested and made a statement indicating he should have killed her.

Photographs taken by police showed significant injuries to the woman’s face, including a two-inch laceration above her left eye and severe swelling. Prosecutors charged Kelvie with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm and third-degree assault causing substantial bodily harm, both felonies. He faces up to 20 years in prison if convicted on the most serious charge.

Kelvie made an initial court appearance on Tuesday where bail was set at $200,000 with conditions including no contact with the victim.
