According to the Brooklyn Center Police Department, a second caller from the same home told 911 that someone inside was armed with knives. Officers responded and, during the course of their investigation, requested crisis negotiators to assist on scene.

According to police, an adult male eventually exited the home with a chainsaw after being told he was under arrest. Officers first deployed pepper balls and 40mm less-lethal rounds in an effort to stop him. When those tactics failed to bring the man under control, officers fired their weapons and struck him.
