Investigators had received information that 40-year-old Michael Todd Hart was hiding there after being seen back in the Iron Range area following his escape from the Northeast Regional Corrections Center on Sept. 23.

Officers searched the home and located Hart under a basement stairwell. He refused to come out, and officers deployed pepper balls before taking him into custody. Even after being handcuffed, authorities said Hart remained uncooperative and assaulted deputies on scene.

A woman identified as 29-year-old Devon Michelle Shackelton was also arrested at the residence. Investigators say she is accused of aiding an offender.

Both Hart and Shackelton were booked into the Itasca County Jail and are awaiting arraignment on new charges connected to the incident. Hart also remains held on his outstanding warrant for escape from custody.
