Edina Man Allegedly Tried to Grab Cop’s Gun During Struggle
BY MN CRIME STAFF
A domestic disturbance in Edina escalated into a violent struggle with police that allegedly included an attempt by the suspect to take an officer’s handgun.
The incident happened Thursday, Jan. 29 at a home in the 5700 block of Schaefer Road, where officers were sent after a woman reported being pushed to the ground during an argument inside.
The woman told officers she got into an argument with her husband, later identified as Shady Mtanos Chahoud, 43, of Edina, and that he pushed her down inside the home. Officers spoke with the woman by phone before arriving and were told two children were inside the residence along with two adult witnesses.

According to the criminal complaint, officers attempted to speak with Chahoud at the scene but said he became increasingly agitated and began grabbing at people inside the home. Officers told him he was being detained and attempted to place his arms behind his back so he could be handcuffed.
Investigators say Chahoud slapped officers’ hands away and began swinging his arms while physically resisting. Officers then engaged in a struggle to gain control of him inside the residence. During the altercation, one officer reported feeling Chahoud grab the grip of the officer’s handgun on the right side of the duty belt and attempt to pull it from the holster as they went to the ground. The officer said the duty belt was being tugged while Chahoud continued trying to access the firearm, though the gun remained secured in the holster.
Police say Chahoud repeatedly yelled “Shoot me now!” during the struggle and also said he wanted to die.
Chahoud was arrested by Edina police and booked into jail later that day. Records show he was released from custody the following night after posting $40,000 bail with conditions.
He is charged with felony disarming a peace officer for allegedly attempting to take a defensive device from an officer while the officer was performing official duties. He is also charged with misdemeanor domestic assault for allegedly committing an act intended to cause fear of immediate bodily harm or death against a family or household member.
Chahoud, who also goes by the name Chad, is a Minnesota-licensed real estate broker who has worked in property management since 2009. Business materials describe him as the owner and operator of a property management company that oversees single-family homes and multi-unit rental properties in the Twin Cities area, including properties he owns as well as properties managed on behalf of other owners.
Chahoud is scheduled to make his next court appearance on Feb. 2 in Hennepin County District Court. The felony charge carries a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a $10,000 fine, while the domestic assault charge carries a max penalty of 90 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.
