MPD says around 2:10 p.m. on Monday, May 15, a ShotSpotter activated to the sound of gunfire on the 2100 block of Girard Ave. N. and registered around a dozen shots fired. Soon after and on the same block, staff at the Minneapolis Public Schools Davis Center reported building damage from the gunfire.

Officers confirmed the damage and collected evidence at the scene. Based on video footage and information from witnesses in the area of the shots fired call, officers located one of two vehicles that were involved. The juveniles who were involved were then spotted driving the other vehicle, a stolen red Kia, and fled from officers near Lowry Ave. N. and Logan Ave.

Police began to intermittently track the vehicle through cameras until officers in a squad made contact with the stolen Kia again near Lyndale Ave. & 25th Ave N., where the pursuit was resumed. With the help of a Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, officers were able to follow the stolen Kia from a distance.

At around 2:30 p.m. near E. 28th St. & Portland Ave. S., the four occupants of the stolen Kia fled on foot. MPD Chief Brian O’Hara was near the location where the juveniles fled on foot, according to a department media release.

O’Hara responded to the scene and joined the pursuit, running after one of the juvenile suspects and placing him under arrest. In total, three of the four juvenile males were arrested and booked into the Juvenile Detention Center for weapons-related charges. Two firearms were recovered from the stolen Kia.

"The reckless and violent behavior being undertaken by juveniles in stolen Kia and Hyundai vehicles is an emergency,” O’Hara said in a written statement.

“These juveniles are a danger to themselves and to anyone who happens to be around them. For the past year, they have been allowed to continue to wreak havoc in our neighborhoods with no recourse and no consequences. We cannot continue to tolerate this behavior.'"
