3 People Shot on Metro Transit Bus in North Minneapolis

Police are searching for suspects after gunfire struck a north Minneapolis transit bus Friday afternoon, leaving three people wounded.

Metro Transit Police said officers were dispatched shortly before 3:30 p.m. to a reported shooting involving a northbound METRO C Line bus near 36th Avenue North and Penn Avenue North.

Authorities said the bus continued north and came to a stop at 43rd Avenue North, where police and emergency crews met it and began treating victims.

Three people who were aboard the bus were struck by gunfire and taken to North Memorial Hospital, according to police. One person was listed in critical but stable condition, while the other two were believed to have non-life-threatening injuries. Initial information indicated one of the victims was shot in the arm and chest.

Investigators believe the shots were fired into the bus by a shooter who was outside the vehicle. Early information indicated as many as five suspects may have been involved. Police described the suspected shooter as a black male wearing a dark grey jacket, a black hoodie, black jeans and black shoes with a silver piece on the top, according to initial radio dispatches.

Additional suspects were described as wearing black and grey sweatshirts with jeans. All were last seen running westbound on 36th Avenue North.

A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter was requested to assist with the search, and officers established a perimeter in the surrounding neighborhood. The perimeter was later cleared after the suspects were not located. Police remained on scene as detectives continued gathering evidence and interviewing people who were in the area at the time of the shooting.

Metro Transit Police are leading the investigation with assistance from Minneapolis police. As of publication, no arrests have been announced and authorities have not released the identities of those injured. The investigation remains active.
