A Maple Grove man is charged with firing a handgun at a car carrying four people in downtown Minneapolis because he believed they were part of a group chasing him, according to a criminal complaint. No one was hurt.
Antonio Rayshawn King, 37, faces a felony count of possessing a firearm after a conviction for a crime of violence and four felony counts of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon, one for each person in the car. The complaint was issued Oct. 15 in Hennepin County District Court, and bail was set at $150,000.
According to the complaint, the driver told police he was stopped at 11th Avenue South and 6th Street South on Oct. 2 when a man walked up on the passenger side and opened fire from about 20 feet away. None of the four people in the car knew the shooter or why he fired. They drove away and later reported the shooting to officers. Police saw numerous bullet holes in the car and found four 9mm casings where the shooter stood, and surveillance video backed up the victims’ account, the complaint says.

Investigators followed the shooter’s movements on surveillance cameras and recognized him as King, who had been arrested Oct. 6 in a separate gun-possession case while carrying a Sig Sauer 9mm pistol, according to the complaint.
King first denied firing a gun downtown, the complaint says. When investigators told him they would compare the casings from the scene with casings test-fired from the pistol, he admitted shooting at the car. He said a large group had been chasing him that night and that he believed the car was involved, and that he fired twice into the air to scare the people inside and twice at the car to “knock out the windows.” The complaint notes that the people in the car did not match his description of the group.
King is barred from having guns because of a second-degree assault conviction in Hennepin County with a disposition date in March 2024, an offense that also involved a firearm, the complaint says.
