A Blaine police officer was injured after being thrown from a Corvette as a driver fled a DWI investigation, police said. The incident began around 2:32 p.m. Monday, Sept. 21, when officers responded to a reported property-damage crash at Jefferson Street Northeast and Northtown Drive.
Witnesses told the first officer that the driver of an older-model Corvette had been driving recklessly before the crash. The officer noticed signs of suspected impairment, according to the Blaine Police Department.
Police said the driver walked back toward the Corvette, ignored an order to stop and got inside. The officer tried to remove the driver, who shifted into reverse while the officer’s upper body was still partially inside the car.

Witnesses reported the driver accelerated rapidly backward, stopped abruptly and sped forward, throwing the officer from the car, police said. The driver continued through a parking lot before striking a retaining wall and overturning the Corvette.
Other officers helped apprehend the driver. Both the driver and the injured officer were taken to a hospital. The officer has since been released.
Police said the driver was taken to the Anoka County Jail after a medical evaluation and booked on allegations of criminal vehicular operation, fleeing police, assault and DWI. The department did not announce formal charges and said the driver’s name would be released once a criminal complaint is filed.
