A group of motorcycles crashed on Highway 61 just after exiting the Silver Creek Tunnel near Two Harbors on Saturday, sending multiple motorcycles into the southbound lane and into an oncoming car, the Minnesota State Patrol said.

The crash was reported at 12:27 p.m. at mile post 31 in Silver Creek Township in Lake County.

A 31-year-old man from Bruno who was riding one of the motorcycles was pronounced dead at the scene. His name has not been released pending notification of his family. Several other people were hurt.

The two people in the vehicle that was struck, a 72-year-old driver and an 81-year-old passenger, both from Minneapolis, were not hurt.

Road conditions were dry at the time and the State Patrol has not said what caused the initial crash.

Highway 61 was closed in both directions near the tunnel for the crash investigation.

Numerous agencies assisted the State Patrol, including the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Lake County Rescue, Lake County Ambulance, the Two Harbors Fire Department, the Silver Bay and Two Harbors police departments, Mayo Ambulance, the Minnesota Department of Transportation and the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
