A Coon Rapids man threatened to kill a resident and wrestled away a handgun after being discovered in bed with a minor, then fled with two other males and the firearm, prosecutors say.
The confrontation happened July 22, 2026, at a residence in Coon Rapids, according to a criminal complaint filed August 5 in Anoka County District Court.
Daveion Lee Thompson, 19, faces three felony charges: possessing a firearm or ammunition after a conviction for a crime of violence, threats of violence with reckless disregard for risk and simple robbery.

According to the complaint, law enforcement responded to a report of assault and robbery at the home. The victim told officers they returned home and found two unknown males inside. After hearing noise from a bedroom, the victim opened the door and saw their minor daughter in bed with a third male, later identified as Thompson. A black handgun with an extended magazine and auto sear was on the bed near Thompson and the minor.
The victim grabbed the firearm and left the house to call 911. Thompson, the minor and the two other males followed the victim outside. Thompson confronted the victim, wrapping his arms and hands around the victim’s neck and threatening to kill them. The victim told police they feared for their life and for the minor’s safety. During the struggle, Thompson took the victim’s cellphone and managed to regain control of the firearm, though the victim kept the magazine.
Thompson and the two other males then fled on foot to a nearby vehicle. The minor ran after them, demanding the return of the victim’s cellphone. The phone was dropped before the group drove away at high speed. After leaving, Thompson called the minor and spoke with the victim, again threatening to return and kill them.
Officers collected the handgun magazine from the victim, which contained six rounds of .40-caliber ammunition. Investigators later determined Thompson had at least four prior adjudications for crimes of violence, including possessing a firearm or ammunition after a conviction for a crime of violence and fifth-degree assault in August 2024, as well as simple robbery and first-degree aggravated robbery in March 2023. A court date has not yet been set.

Minnesota distinguishes simple robbery (§ 609.24, up to 10 years) from aggravated robbery (§ 609.245), where a weapon or great bodily harm is alleged. First-degree aggravated robbery carries up to 20 years; second-degree up to 15. Carjacking is charged under § 609.247.
