One person died and three others were hospitalized after a boat crash on Lake Vermilion in St. Louis County early Tuesday night.

Authorities responded to the crash near Manbeck Island in Beatty Township around 6:20 p.m. on May 12.

The St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office said the crash involved multiple boats and that numerous people were thrown into the water in the 3600 block of Black Bay Road.

Three people were transported from the scene by ambulance and one of them was airlifted to a Duluth hospital. A fourth person was pronounced dead at the scene after life-saving efforts by medical personnel were unsuccessful.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The deceased person’s name is being withheld pending family notification.

The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by Cook Ambulance, Tower Ambulance, Virginia Ambulance, Orr Ambulance, the Lake Vermilion Fire Brigade, the St. Louis County Rescue Squad and the Midwest Medical Examiner’s Office.
