A 48-year-old man is facing felony charges after he allegedly jumped a fence, grabbed a shovel from a backyard and used it to break into an attached garage before striking a woman in the head in Spring Lake Park.
Michael Allen Sommers faces charges of first-degree burglary and second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon in Anoka County District Court.

According to the criminal complaint, Spring Lake Park police were dispatched to a home on Lakewood Drive NE on March 14 for a reported fight in progress. Call notes indicated the suspect had struck someone at the residence with a shovel.
When officers arrived, they found a man lying on top of Sommers and restraining him.
The female victim told an officer that Sommers jumped the back fence, grabbed a shovel from the yard and broke down the rear door to the attached garage. He then allegedly struck the woman on the head and arms with the shovel, she said.

Officers observed visible injuries on the victim's right hand and left forearm consistent with blunt-force trauma. Additional witnesses at the scene provided the same account of events.
State court records show Sommers has multiple convictions for first-degree DWI, violating a restraining order, felony drug possession, misdemeanor assault, felony theft and disorderly conduct, with additional convictions dating back to April 2000.
First-degree burglary carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. Second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon carries a maximum of seven years. His next court date is set for April 13, 2026.
