16-year-old Dies, Teen Passenger Hurt In Dakota County Semi Crash

A 16-year-old Northfield driver died and a teenage passenger was seriously injured after a crash involving a semi tractor-trailer in Greenvale Township Monday afternoon.

Deputies with the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office were called around 3:23 p.m. on Jan. 19 to an injury crash at the intersection of 320th Street and Foliage Avenue.

Initial information says a semi tractor-trailer traveling westbound on 320th Street collided with a 2012 Lexus CT that was attempting to turn east onto 320th Street from Foliage Avenue.

Deputies arrived to find two people inside the Lexus unresponsive. Lifesaving efforts were attempted at the scene. The driver of the Lexus, 16-year-old Berlyn Berghuis, of Northfield, was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger, 16-year-old Anabelle Martinez, was airlifted to a hospital with serious injuries and remains under medical care.

The driver of the semi was not injured.

The crash remains under investigation. The Dakota County Sheriff’s Office is leading the investigation with assistance from the Minnesota State Patrol. Authorities said no additional information will be released at this time.
