At about 5:01 p.m., Minneapolis firefighters were dispatched to reports of a residential structure fire at a one-and-a-half-story home in the 4300 block of 30th Avenue South.
When crews arrived, they found smoke and fire showing from the first floor and an elderly resident outside in the front yard. Firefighters were told by the resident that someone else was still inside the home.
Crews stretched hose lines and began searching the residence. Firefighters located the second resident inside, carried the person out and immediately started medical care, including CPR. Ambulances were requested and both residents were transported to a local hospital in critical condition.

Fire officials said crews had significant difficulty moving through the home and reaching the fire because of a large amount of items and debris packed throughout the interior. The fire burned through the first floor into the basement and extended through wall spaces into the attic.
A second alarm was later called to bring in additional crews for relief and to assist with the extensive work required to move debris, cut through flooring and open walls and ceilings to fully extinguish the fire and remaining hot spots.
Firefighters remained on scene working into the evening. The home was declared uninhabitable and will be boarded. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
