Minneapolis police say a total of six people were shot in the early morning hours of July 5th, just two and a half hours apart, as Independence Day festivities turned deadly.

The first shooting happened one minute after midnight on July 5th on the 1300 block of Olson Memorial Highway. Officers arrived and found a 40-year-old male with no pulse and a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Officers began providing CPR before paramedics brought the man to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was pronounced deceased. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner identified the victim as William Lamont Hudson, of Minneapolis.

A second shooting occurred just after 1:30 a.m., at Columbia Park, where officers found a 19-year-old man with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the neck. That man was transported by ambulance to Hennepin Healthcare.

At 1:45 a.m., officers were called to Hennepin Healthcare to take a shooting report after a 19-year-old female was brought to the hospital with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound.

Minutes later, Fourth Precinct officers responded to a shooting on the 2300 block of Penn Ave. N. Officers there found a 27-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the face. Paramedics brought the man to a trauma center, and police say his injuries are non-life-threatening.

Just before 2:30 a.m., officers responded to North Memorial to take a report after two 17-year-old males who were dropped off in a vehicle and who were suffering from non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

In addition, police say just before 4:30 a.m., officers responded to the Holiday Gas Station on the 2300 block of Washington Ave. N. after shots were fired at four adult females standing near a vehicle. No one was injured in that incident.

These shootings capped off a frightening and violent night in the city. In the late evening hours of July 4th, multiple agencies worked to control a large and unruly crowd in and around Boom Island Park. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said that 11 juveniles and five adults were arrested after they were seen discharging fireworks directed at vehicles and other people.

Police say no serious injuries were reported but scanner traffic reviewed by MN CRIME indicated one male victim suffered a severe abdominal injury after a firework exploded nearby.

A 17-year-old male has since been charged with 2nd-degree assault and fleeing officers in relation to one of the incidents. O’Hara stated that the teen is alleged to have shot fireworks in the direction of a squad car with two officers inside. Officers pursued the male and were able to take him into custody.
