Crews knocked down the porch fire and made entry, encountering additional fire on both the first and second floors before bringing the blaze under control.
While searching the house, firefighters located a man inside a second-floor bathroom and removed him from the home. The adult male was transported to a local hospital by Saint Paul paramedics. Fire officials said resuscitation efforts were provided during transport, but the man was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

Fire investigators are continuing to work to determine what caused the fire. Initial information from investigators found a space heater near the area where the fire is believed to have started. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death and has not yet released the man’s identity.
The American Red Cross is assisting four people who were displaced by the fire, including three adult men and one adult woman. Fire officials noted the incident cannot be officially classified as a fire fatality until all investigations are complete. If confirmed, it would be the city’s fifth fire-related death this year. Saint Paul averages fewer than three fire fatalities annually.
