Duluth Officer Stabbed During Downtown Arrest

A Duluth police officer was stabbed early Saturday while engaging with a man accused of threatening paramedics and damaging an ambulance.

The incident unfolded around 12:35 a.m. Saturday near North 1st Avenue West and West 1st Street.

Officers were called after reports of an intoxicated man striking a Mayo Ambulance and threatening the paramedics inside.

Authorities say an officer located the man one block north of where the original call was reported. As the officer attempted to detain him, the man actively resisted and stabbed the officer in the leg during the struggle.

Kevin Daniel Couillard, 22, of Duluth, was taken into custody at the scene and booked into the Saint Louis County Jail. He is being held on probable cause for first-degree assault against a police officer, disorderly conduct, fleeing on foot, obstructing legal process and public nuisance. Formal charges have not yet been filed.

The injured officer suffered wounds that were not considered life-threatening but required transport to a local hospital for treatment. Police say the officer has since been treated and released.
