48-year-old Man Dies After South Minneapolis Shooting

A man who was found shot inside a vehicle Thursday night in south Minneapolis has died of his injuries at the hospital, police say.

The shooting happened before 8:20 p.m. on May 15, with an ambulance crew near Abbott Northwestern Hospital initially flagged down by the victim’s wife.

Inside a vehicle nearby, paramedics located a man with a life-threatening gunshot wound. The ambulance crew transported him to Hennepin Healthcare, where he was admitted in critical condition.

Officers later located a shooting scene on the 2700 block of Columbus Avenue. According to initial information, the shooting stemmed from an altercation inside a vehicle, which eventually escalated to gunfire. The gunman fled, and the injured man’s wife drove him toward the hospital where they located the ambulance nearby, MPD says.

Forensic scientists processed the scene and officers canvassed the area for additional witnesses and surveillance footage. No arrests have been made as of publication.

The victim, identified by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner as 48-year-old Michael Ray Adkins of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, died Friday morning at 10:01 a.m. The medical examiner determined Adkins died from a gunshot wound to the back and ruled it a homicide.

“It’s incredibly frustrating to see yet another life lost to senseless violence. We don’t have all the answers yet as to what happened, but I can promise you that our investigators will work relentlessly to bring justice to this victim and his family,” Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said in a statement.
