During the traffic stop, officers conducted an inventory search of the vehicle and found a duffle bag in the backseat containing a Geisselle Automatic 5.56 rifle, two loaded rifle magazines, a box of pistol ammunition and two plastic bags with loose live rounds. Following a Miranda advisory, Hawkins told police that the firearm belonged to a friend and that he had received it from someone on Minnehaha Avenue just before the stop. He admitted to touching the firearm several times and acknowledged that his DNA would be on it.

Hawkins is ineligible to possess firearms due to a juvenile adjudication for felony aggravated robbery in Cook County, Illinois, in June 2012 and a felony robbery conviction in Cook County, Illinois, in June 2018.

Hawkins is currently in custody at the Ramsey County Adult Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in court on June 3, 2026.
