A 24-year-old man faces a felony assault charge after allegedly stabbing a family member multiple times with a kitchen knife during an argument at a south Minneapolis home.

Asad Abdukhadir Omar faces one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing substantial bodily harm.

According to the criminal complaint, Minneapolis police were dispatched to a reported stabbing on the 3000 block of 5th Avenue South around midnight Sunday, March 29. When officers arrived, the front door was closed. They knocked and announced themselves.

People exiting the residence told officers the victim had been stabbed by his brother and that the suspect was still inside. Shortly after, the victim came out wearing a bath towel, bleeding from his head and back shoulder area. Officers saw a puncture wound on his upper back with active bleeding, the complaint states.

The victim was taken to the front yard and transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. Medical staff treated him for multiple injuries, including cuts to his body and a puncture wound consistent with a stab injury. He was also bleeding from his head.

Once stable, the victim told officers that earlier in the day, Omar had been in a verbal argument with family members, including his father. The victim said Omar had been asked to leave the residence and became increasingly agitated, according to court records.

The victim said that shortly after, while he was exiting the bathroom and entering his room, Omar suddenly stabbed him in the back with a knife. The victim fell to the ground and tried to defend himself from additional stabbing attempts, sustaining multiple cuts in the process. He described the weapon as a silver metal kitchen knife commonly used for cooking. The victim said he couldn’t recall all the details after the assault, but another person in the home called 911, the complaint says.

Officers entered the residence with a ballistic shield after learning Omar was still armed. They called for him to come down from the second floor. Omar complied and was taken into custody without incident.

Omar was initially booked into the Hennepin County jail on March 29 on a probable cause domestic assault hold but was released Monday after the 36-hour hold expired. A warrant was issued and he was rearrested Wednesday by the Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office.

The second-degree assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
