Driver With Prior DWI Charged in Fatal Andover Crash, Flee

A man accused of driving drunk and fleeing the scene of a fatal crash in Andover last week has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide.

According to the criminal complaint filed Monday in Anoka County, deputies responded around 5:44 p.m. on May 16 to a two-vehicle crash near 165th Avenue NW and 7th Avenue NW.

The second vehicle, a 2019 Ford F-350, was found unoccupied. Witnesses saw a man with ginger hair and a black t-shirt stumbling away from the pickup and running into a wooded area, court documents said.

Deputies later found a man matching that description walking nearby. He was identified as 48-year-old Aloysius Kenneth Johnson, of Andover. Johnson reportedly had slurred speech, poor balance, smelled like alcohol and had dried blood on his face, hands and arms. He was taken into custody and evaluated for injuries.

While speaking with deputies, Johnson allegedly asked them what happened. When told there had been a crash, he denied that he was driving. His wife, who had returned to the scene, identified the Ford as Johnson’s truck. She told deputies that she and Johnson had been at the SRO Bar in Oak Grove, where he had been drinking vodka sodas. She said she drove ahead of him while heading home and believed he tried to beat her there by turning northbound on 7th Avenue.

In a post-Miranda interview, Johnson admitted to consuming three to four vodka sodas and confirmed he was the only person in the truck. He claimed he didn’t remember the crash but recalled being in a field and running. He said he was on his way back to the scene when deputies arrested him. A blood draw was executed on scene under a warrant.

Multiple road signs and a light pole were also damaged in the crash. The criminal complaint says Stack was unable to be immediately removed from her vehicle due to the severity of the damage.

Court records show Johnson has a prior DWI conviction from 1998 in Anoka County. He remained in custody as of Monday and, if convicted of the felony charge, Johnson faces up to 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
