2 Charged After Fridley Shooting Leaves Man Wounded

Two people are facing felony charges after a shooting in Fridley last week left a man hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.

According to charges filed Monday in Anoka County, 22-year-old Luvell Kaagan Bowman, of Andover, is accused of firing shots during a dispute on Oct. 3 that struck a man in the leg and hand.

Bowman is charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm, second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon causing substantial bodily harm, and drive-by shooting toward a person. Each count carries a firearm enhancement that could add mandatory prison time if he is convicted.

Also charged is 21-year-old Natalie Amaya Marie Jones, of Spring Lake Park. Prosecutors allege Jones drove the vehicle involved and aided Bowman in the shooting. She faces the same three counts under Minnesota’s aiding and abetting statute.

Fridley PD said officers were called to the 5700 block of 2nd Street Northeast around the time of the shooting, where they found the victim with two gunshot wounds. Witnesses reported hearing an argument followed by two to three shots. The victim later told police the conflict stemmed from a dispute between his ex-girlfriend and Jones over marijuana cartridges. When tensions escalated, Jones allegedly showed up outside the victim’s residence with others in two vehicles. The group initially left but returned shortly after, and that’s when a man in the back seat fired at the victim as he approached to talk with Jones.

Investigators reviewed video from a witness’s bicycle camera, which captured two vehicles: a blue Subaru registered to Jones and a black Ford registered to Bowman. Witness descriptions matched both, with Jones identified as the driver and Bowman as the shooter.

Police obtained a warrant for Jones’s Subaru and, upon executing it, found a backpack with a handgun, ammunition and other firearm-related items. Bowman was later arrested after briefly attempting to flee on foot. Both remain in custody with no bail as they await an initial court appearance, scheduled for Tuesday morning.

If convicted, Bowman and Jones each face up to 20 years in prison on their most serious charge. Authorities had not released the victim’s condition as of publication.
