Man Accused of Stabbing Girlfriend's 12-year-old Son

A 50-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder and assault after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend’s 12-year-old son multiple times earlier this month at a Minneapolis apartment building, critically wounding him.

According to a filed criminal complaint, officers were called to an address on the 3200 block of Cedar Ave. S. in Minneapolis on May 6 where they found Craig Allen Stevens, 50, of Minneapolis, sitting on the couch in the living room, holding a knife that he eventually stabbed into the 12-year-old’s chest and neck area.

Officers say the boy suffered multiple stab wounds. Officers were able to deploy a taser, striking Stevens, and freeing the victim. Stevens was then taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers.

The victim was transported to Hennepin Healthcare where he was said to be in critical condition, suffering from multiple stab injuries to his face, scalp, arm, chest and abdomen. Doctors were forced to insert a breathing tube due to a lung injury. Doctors say the victim is still on a breathing machine but was said to be in stable condition.

The victim’s mother told police that Stevens has been her boyfriend for two years and is a frequent user of methamphetamine. Stevens reportedly left treatment a week prior and had been using again. She said that over the past two days Stevens was holding knives and acting paranoid, but she stated she can usually calm him down. The mother stated she called police earlier in the day to ask for assistance, but Stevens left the residence before officers arrived.

Police conducted a search warrant at the residence and recovered two knives suspected of being used in the attack. Stevens remains in custody on a $150,000 bond. He faces up to 20 years in prison on each charge.
