N March 2, 2025, officers were dispatched to a residence in the City of Hastings, County of Dakota, State of Minnesota. Dispatch advised a woman was sobbing and hard to understand. The line disconnected and dispatch was unable to reach the woman. Upon arrival, officers observed a man, later identified as Cody William Vance, [DOB REDACTED], defendant herein, looking out a window. Defendant then walked outside and was visibly upset. Defendant told the officer, “I can’t go to jail, if I’m about to get arrested things are going to get real.
I’m not going to jail without a final stance.” Defendant clenched his fists and rubbed his head. Officers de-escalated the situation. Defendant initially stated that argument with Victim [NAME REDACTED]. Defendant then stated that he normally carried a firearm, but that it was put away. Victim [NAME REDACTED] intoxicated and hitting things. Victim attempted to call 911 and defendant took the phone. After taking the phone, defendant grabbed the firearm he kept in the couch cushions, pointed it at her and threatened to kill her.
Officers located the firearm in the couch cushions. Defendant later admitted to taking the phone when Victim attempted to call 911. Children were present in the household. An 11-year-old child stated he heard defendant threaten to kill Victim. Defendant and Victim are family or household members.
