On March 30, 2026, a 911 caller, BARRY CHRISTOPHER NELSON [DOB REDACTED], called Dakota County 911 to report his roommate, “Victim” herein, had people over who would not leave. NELSON reported that one of the house guests hit him in the chest with an open hand. Officers spoke to NELSON on the phone. Officers believed NELSON may have been intoxicated, as his speech was slurred. While on the phone with NELSON, NELSON reported that the house guests had left the residence, which was located in Burnsville, Dakota County, Minnesota.
While speaking with NELSON, officers could hear a female in the background, Victim, say, “He pulled a gun out.” NELSON said that a male houseguest attacked him, so he responded by getting his gun and loading it. After the phone conversation with NELSON ended, Victim called 911 herself. Officers arrived at the Burnsville residence and spoke with both NELSON and Victim. Victim explained that she and NELSON were roommates and have lived together since 2024. Victim said that prior to police involvement on March 30, 2026, Victim invited two of her friends over to the residence.
Victim invited a female and male friend over. At some point, NELSON came into the basement with Victim and her friends to meet Victim’s female friend. Shortly thereafter, an argument began between NELSON and Victim’s male friend. NELSON then told Victim’s friends to leave, and the male house guest hit NELSON in the chest. NELSON told Victim, “You know what I am gonna get,” which Victim [NAME REDACTED] was going to get his shotgun. Victim [NAME REDACTED] went upstairs and then the Victim and her friends were able to hear a shotgun being loaded upstairs.
That was when Victim [NAME REDACTED] called 911. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was going to shoot her friends, so the house guests left. After the 911 call ended, Victim [NAME REDACTED] in the bathroom upstairs with the shotgun. She went upstairs to stop him from loading the gun. As Victim [NAME REDACTED], NELSON told Victim [NAME REDACTED]. A struggle ensued, and Victim [NAME REDACTED] was hit with part of the shotgun and fell. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was able to load one or two rounds into the shotgun before she fled downstairs.
Victim reported that NELSON followed her. NELSON stood on the landing near the front door of the residence with the shotgun, and Victim heard the shotgun go off. She saw a spent shotgun shell casing fall off the bottom of the steps. Victim [NAME REDACTED] was fearful that NELSON would shoot her and kill her. Victim then called 911 herself. 2 19HA-CR-26-457 Filed in District Court State of Minnesota 3/31/2026 In a Mirandized statement, NELSON told officers that he and Victim had been arguing since 5 PM that evening.
NELSON said the argument was about Victim having friends over and Victim’s dogs barking. NELSON stated that he does not like when Victim [NAME REDACTED], and he wanted them out of his house. NELSON reported that one of the house guests attacked him. He then wanted Victim to leave his house as well. NELSON explained that he wanted to intimidate Victim, [NAME REDACTED] would leave. He went upstairs to retrieve his shotgun, racked a round, and fired it into the ceiling. NELSON said Victim was not upstairs with him when he shot the shotgun, and he did not shoot it at her.
